|
| Peterbald come in all colors and
patterns, which one can imagine, with white and without white, with
silver or in golden, with tabby pattern and in Colourpoint. |
- black, blue
- chocolate, lilac
- red, cream
- cinnamon, fawn
- tortie, bluecream

- chocolate tortie, lilac tortie, etc.
- All those colours can also have all tabby patterns, for example black
spotted, red mackerel, blue-cream blotched, and so on.

- All those colours can appear with silver or with golden, for example
blue smoke, black golden shaded, blue golden mackerel, red silver
blotched, chocolate tortie silver spotted, cream silver mackerel, and so
on.
- And all those colours can also be with white (bicolour, Van, etc.),
for example black and white bicolour, red and white Van, tortie mackerel
bicolour, cream smoke with white, black silver blotched bicolour, and so
on.

- And - last but not least - all those colours can also appear as
Colourpoint, with white or without white, in silver or golden pointed,
tabby pointed, and so on.

There exist hundreds of colours and pattern combinations, and all those
varieties can be admired on shows.
One can see the colours on the skin, the skin has the colour tone of
the colour, just paler, for example black does not appear as coal-black, it
appears as light anthrazit, blue appears as pale grey with a slight
blue tinge. Silver appears like "pepper and salt", mostly one can
see the difference when one compares a black cat with a black smoke
cat, there is a difference in the colour tone on the skin. Also the
points can be seen quite clear, because the skin is darker coloured
where the points are.
With the tabby patterns it's tricky, mostly one can see if it is a tabby
cat or not, but which tabby pattern is quite difficult to decide.
Mostly one can see the tabby markings on the face, the front legs
and the tail. Sometimes the spots on the stomach remain, but not
always. Best the tabby pattern can be seen in young cats. |

Breed profile
|
| The Peterbald is a medium sized
elegant cat of Oriental type. The main characteristic is its
hairlessness. The head is wedge-shaped and
forms a triangle, the muzzle is quite fine and shall not show a
pinch. The lines on both side of the head - when viewed from the
front - shall be straight. When viewed in profile the nose is long and
straight and forms a very slight angle with the forehead, which is
almost flat.
The ears are very large and very broad at the base. They shall
continue the straight lines of the triangular head shape.
The eyes are medium and almond in shape, and set oblique to fit to
the oriental expression of the head. Eye color may be any color,
there is no relation to the coat color.
The neck is long, slender and elegant.
The body is longer, sturdy (not so slender like in Siamese or
Orientals) and very well muscled.
The legs are long and slender with very prominent long toes and
large paw pads.
The tail is quite long, thin and tapering to the tip.
The ideal characteristic is, that the Peterbald
does not have any hairs.
There are three differnet types of skin:
a) Completely hairless - hairless:
The skin is soft, elastic and very warm to touch. The skin is
wrinkled on the head (on the forehead one can see many wrinkles),
around the neck and the shoulders, in the upper part mainly of the
hind legs, and on the groin.
b) Flocked or velour coat - velour (flocked):
The coat is very short, fine and thin, it is a down-coat, which is
just slightly longer and more on the extremities. The cat appears
hairless, but one can feel a slight resistance when stroking the
skin.
c) Brush coat - brush:
The coat is short, dense and wiry with an irregular structure,
ranging from soft to coarse. This is one of the distinguishing
features, no other breed has such a coat.
A Peterbald may combine those types of coat, it may have a brush
coat on the extremities (muzzle, ears, legs and tail) and may have a
velour coat on the body. |
History
The founder of the breed is Mrs. Olga Mironova
from Russia. She made a mating between the Don Sphynx male Aphinogen
Miph (owned by Mrs. Tatjana Komarova) and the tortie Oriental
Shorthair female Radma von Jagerhoff. She gave birth to Muskat and Mandarin iz Murino, and
Nokturn and Neghenka iz Murino. Thus the first Peterbalds were born
in January 1994. |
Temperament
The Peterbald has an extremely lovely and gentle
temperament, they like to talk a lot. As every Sphynx breed they are slightly selective
towards other cat breeds, they are absolutely devoted to their
owners and want to be their number one.
They like to play with everything, never scratch, and are always kind. |
Grooming
In colder seasons their skin gets thicker, they
accumulate fat under the skin, which disappears when it gets warmer. Sphynx cats like it warm at home. Treatment is rather easy, simply wash
their skin from time to time with a mild baby shampoo. |
